Jim Slavich

Girls Level 2 Jr & Level 3 Coach

I grew up in the northwest suburbs of Chicago. My gymnastics career started when I was freshman in high school. I competed 4 years for J.B. Conan HS, where I helped our team win
2 state titles and one second place finish. Even though it was a late start to the sport, I left high school with numerous awards and medals, as well as most improved gymnast honors. My accomplishments were good enough to earn a scholarship to Western Michigan University, where I competed as a Bronco for 5 years. As a multi-event specialist, I was nationally ranked on still rings, parallel bars, and high bar. I graduated in 1994 with a BS degree in Aviation Science. My coaching career started when I was 15 years old. I coached various recreational and team level classes throughout my high school and college years, which helped pay for all of my extra gym time. During this period, I realized my true passion for coaching and teaching children. I put my flying career on hold and I went back to school and earned a K-12 Masters of Teaching degree from Roosevelt University. I also took a full time position coaching as the boys team and recreational director at Gymkhana Gymnastics in Illinois. After spending 6 years coaching in Chicago, I met my wife and we moved to Kalamazoo, Michigan where we both pursued our love for gymnastics. We spent 13 years in the Kalamazoo area, coaching gymnastics full time during the fall and winter months. During the summers, we drive 1100 miles north to run our fishing and hunting camp, Black Bear Lodge. During our time in Michigan I have coached everything from pre-school to competitive Level 10 gymnastics (boys and girls). I have helped many gymnasts qualify to the state and national levels. I also spent a short time as a Judge. Gymnastics has been an integral part of my life. I truly feel blessed having been able to spend 30 years of my life working with the thousands of kids that I have taught in such an amazing sport. When I am not coaching, I enjoy spending time with my family (wife and 2 kids). I also enjoy being outside, usually hunting and fishing. And because my wife and I own Black Bear Lodge, where we spend 4 months of the year in the Canadian Wilderness, I definitely get my fair share of the great outdoors. I look forward to continuing my tenure as a gymnastic coach and am very excited to be part of Champion Gymnastics. You can reach me at coachjimjillian@yahoo.com
